The studio is designed for one of India’s prolific artists as a painting studio. The three level row house is situated in a quiet residential neighborhood in Mumbai. The structure was initially used as a house and was in a decrepit condition. The challenge was to create an environment which was both inspiring for creative work and could adapt to impromptu social gatherings of friends, art collectors and fellow artists.
A predominately open plan suited best for the above requirements was created by clustering stores and services and the stair in one zone. Another challenge was of creating interconnections between the various studio levels. This was achieved through the open stair and the play of light through the vertical and horizontal voids. A rhythm of large pivoted fenestrations became a prominent expression on the facade which allowed for diffused light and ventilation at different times of the day.
The material palette is more neutral; translucent glass and in-situ cement floors with light colored veneers combined with a grey palette have been used keeping in mind a studio like environment and the artist’s work.
