The design of the Kharghar Central Park has been conceptualised with a strong emphasis on ecology and environment to harness resources – natural and manmade. The social, cultural and recreational needs of the urban agglomeration of Navi Mumbai have been considered and amalgamated within this backdrop. It is an attempt to resolve the issue of sustainability and the future development of Navi Mumbai as a tourist location.
The central Park would be a part of a larger regional canvas integrating the surrounding natural and built features. Designed on the principles ecological sustainability and biodiversity, it acts as catalyst in process of rejuvenation of the surrounding ecosystem. Regional extensions to strong ecological/ cultural/ tourist features such as a bird sanctuary, an island, a religious place , and a river was one of the strategies.
The other was to create contiguous green tissue by impregnating the neighborhood with the network of trees and connecting the other open spaces of the neighborhood. Inconspicuous built features, which are low rise, dense, trellised open areas, stepped gardens, terraced built form, roof gardens merging with the park and providing uninterrupted views of the park and surroundings were proposed. We have prepared a flexible master plan by phasing the budget to cater to various needs and scales of recreation modes, and to develop the park as a public space.
