Space Planning

Floor wise space planning

MO-OF initiated the space planning exercise by conducting a thorough analysis of the existing building and the previous design proposal by the late Ar. J. Mistry. The process involved multiple stakeholder engagements, including discussions with hospital administrators and Trust leadership to define current functional needs and align the spatial design with the future vision of the institution.

The architectural space planning aims to optimize the spatial efficiency of medical areas while enabling dynamic, future-ready learning environments. Given the new student hostels to the west, the teaching facilities will logically shift to the western block. This helps reduce cross-campus student movement and supports the creation of a coherent academic zone. This repositioning allows the General Hospital to be consolidated within the eastern block, making it more active and functionally segregated. Furthermore, planned movement corridors between the General Hospital and the academic block will enhance connectivity and operational efficiency.

Salient Features of the Space Plan

  • Zoning and Vertical Planning
    • Clear separation between OPD (Outpatient Department) and IPD (Inpatient Department) functions across different floors.
  • Access and Circulation
    • Segregated access points for the General Hospital, Super Specialty Hospital, Emergency Services, Medical College, and Service Blocks to streamline movement and enhance security.
  • Wayfinding and Public Areas
    • A double-height, free-flowing central lobby is designed for intuitive navigation.
    • Reception, pharmacy, and billing counters are placed along one side to create an open, uncluttered circulation path to elevators and staircases.
  • Clinical Planning
    • Intensive Care Units (ICUs) are co-located with Operation Theatres (OTs) for better functional adjacency and clinical outcomes.
  • Support Services
    • A dedicated block for additional stores and utility services addresses the deficit in service infrastructure.
  • Capacity-Based Planning
    • Two separate space plans for the medical college have been developed: one aligned with NMC-100 norms, and the other for NMC-150, both with defined phasing strategies.

This space planning proposal not only responds to the current needs of the institution but also lays the foundation for a phased, sustainable, and integrated future development of the medical campus.
